The Tomasi family in Vallagarina
La Cadalora is based in Santa Margherita di Ala, in southern Trentino. Rodolfo and Tiziano Tomasi took over the family estate in the early 1980s; the winery identifies 1982 as its first vintage in its present form. Michele joined the work of the estate in 2011.
The family’s account describes a deliberate adaptation of the traditional pergola trentina. Planting density increased and grape yields per vine decreased, while the agricultural character of the inherited landscape was retained. Variety selection followed the differences between the estate’s soils.
Five names, distinct vineyards
Five named vineyard wines make the estate’s approach easy to read. Cadalora is associated with Chardonnay; Gazzi with Pinot Grigio; Majere with Casetta; Sanvalentino with Marzemino; and Vignalet with Pinot Nero.
The producer places Cadalora and Gazzi on the Val Cipriana alluvial fan. Majere occupies steep terraces above Santa Margherita, with dry-stone walls and areas that require manual work. Vignalet lies higher on the same hillside system, close to woodland. These are named places behind the labels, rather than a single general description of Trentino.
Casetta and the Majere vineyard
Casetta is a local variety that La Cadalora continued to cultivate after its wider use declined. The estate’s vineyard history records that the Tomasi family acquired Majere in the early 2000s and replanted it with Casetta.
The producer’s general Majere sheet describes fermentation in stainless steel, followed by twelve months in small French oak barrels and a further year in bottle. This describes the published house method; the technical sheet for the offered vintage remains the reference for a commercial request.
